Yodeling bout Hadoop..

Finally the word is officially out!.. Yahoo is publicly announcing it's wide interest and involvement with Hadoop , an open source project started by Doug Cutting, the Lucene guy! under the Apache Software Foundation aiming to offer a platform for parallelizing user applications on commodity hardware, large scale distributed computing is the name of the game. It is an implementation of the Map/Reduce programming framework. and also provides a distributed file system(hdfs) to go with it.

Yahoo is going full throttle on the PR with it's Grid initiative..

  • It appeared yesterday on Jeremy Zawodny's blog which refers to the Yahoo ydn tech blog entry announcing the same and have put up milestones we'v covered on the project.

  • Doug and Eric (Yahoo's Director of Grid Computing) are presenting a talk on Hadoop right now at OSCON, Portland.

  • David Filo (Chief Yahoo and Co-Founder) and Doug spoke with Tim O'reilly after his panel appearance at OSCON which might lead to him talking bout Yahoo and Hadoop on his blog. Talks are underway about a book being published on Hadoop, Well!.. we already have our animal figured out for the Nutshell series ;-)

Hadoop appearances:

  • Hadoop's biggest deployment anywhere is in Yahoo, a 2000 node cluster to empower research on Ad Systems and Web Search

  • We're already seeing universities begin to teach about Hadoop (University of Washington) and looking at building their own clusters (Carnegie Mellon University).

  • Pig, a Yahoo project that's being made available under a BSD-style open source license, provides an sql-like interface for querying extremely large data sets uses Hadoop to parallelize it's computations.

  • HBase, a Bigtable-like storage mechanism over Hadoop DFS. It provides a means for organizing and efficiently accessing large data sets that is offered by HDFS.

Map-Reduce Appearances

  • Mars is a Map-Reduce framework on GPUs. It uses the NVidia CUDA architechture for GPGPU programming.

  • Here is a Map-Reduce implementation on the Cell Broadband engine

An official list of projects that are powered-by Hadoop can be found here. So go ahead and play around with it and get involved! Everyone's gonna eventually!! :-D

All Hadoop updates are put up here

.. Don't be a Dick.

You know how that phrase goes. I have nothing against alcohol.. I love getting tipsy every once in a while. It doesn't take a lot to be off alcohol, it takes a lot more to keep moderation.. to not cross the line. A friend of mine who also feels strongly bout Alcoholism has written an article which I'd like to share.. I'm not hoping to "cure" ppl off addiction or strike a thunder of self realization.. but one will at least think twice before acting reckless Today after reading this. So here goes..

“Alcohol can kill”... sounds very cliché yet rings very true. I write this as a house surgeon at Gandhi who has seen things up close. While posted in medicine, the countless cases of alcoholism and its many effects (including cirrhosis of liver, stroke, alcoholic dependence with psychosis) seen did sadden me, but they were treated as cases and forgotten about.
Moving onto casualty, the scenario was totally different. Number of young people brought dead or almost dead due to road traffic accidents caused under the influence of a drink too many, inebriation and the oh-so-beloved high of alcohol did touch me but the impact wasn’t hard enough, to make me want do something to help. When many a pleas and punishments couldn’t drive sense into these reckless, living for the moment souls, how could I make a difference was the placid consolation that I gave myself.
Night duty at casualty, what with the building overflowing with drunkards, cops, victims of RTA’s, the stench it all brings and tackling it all when you fighting sleep; wouldn’t be anyone’s favourite duties. Thursday night wasn’t any different, declaring some dead, trying to save the others takes getting used to; especially when you haven’t yet created a perfect shield that protect your emotions from getting involved. Like I was saying just another night, while I was busy checking on some other emergency case, two young boys were rushed in by the emergency medical personnel; one of them was being declared dead by my colleague, the other was drowsy yet vitals stable. Talk about rich kids drunk and involved in a car accident was floating around. Busy as we were, none of us did really bother with the details.

The friends, who were sloshed to the core, couldn’t reach his family. When a few words uttered by his friends caught my attention, made me realise that it might be someone I know and through an eerie coincidence it was. One look at the boy sent a chill through my spine; young all of twenty, lying covered partly in blood, his jet-black hair shining and his face so innocent and fresh left me shaking. For now this wasn’t another brought dead cases, this was a son lost from dear father, a sister no longer had a brother she adored and idolised, a grandma could no longer cuddle her only grandson, a young and fiery soul lost to this world. The shield that I was trying so hard to build was shattered and so was I.

Reasons that they give are many and varied. Some do it for kicks, some love the feel, some others think its haute couture, and many think it’s a fashion statement and “what the heck everybody else is doing it, I have the bucks and nobody to stop me”. All of them know that this simply for a high addiction will create havoc in their life or maybe even in death but nobody gives a damn, cause it can happen but it hasn’t, has it, at least not to them.
I write this, not as a lecture with a title alcohol and drunken driving kills, not as a plea and I have no power to punish for an offence so great. The decision is ours; the facts are out there. I’m just hoping we still have some sense left.

Sudeepta here, who cares.

P.S-thanks for reading the whole thing... it did take some patience on your part. Please pass it on from my side if you like.

Homesick..

It's nothing new that i wanna go home, but off late it's getting to me a lot more. Have started hating everything around me.. nothing seems familiar. Feel afraid bout things being taken away from me.. things that are dear to me. Don't feel like a part of anything. Maybe it's just coz i'v shifted into the new place. Maybe i'm just being a wuss. Maybe i'm just delirious - when am i not :-p
Have drowned myself into work off late.. haven't gotten much done, but anyways.. have been virtually living in office. If it's not work, it's work people, work food, work culture, work cribs. Gotta do something bout that.. i'm workin on it. Haven't been paying attention to formalities that I shud have honoured. Missed 3 of my friends' weddings.. 3 very good friends. Dunno what's wrong with me. Have gotten awfully careless bout such things. Have been taking my friends for granted i guess. Need to make it up to them. Need to set my priorities straight. I'm sure of one thing though.. my Mumbai trip has been loooong overdue.

Formula 44..

When we drink, we get drunk...
When we get drunk, we fall asleep...
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin...
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven...
So, let’s all get drunk and go to heaven!

- Brian O’Rourke

P.S. Mostly beer for me please.. Haven't had the best of experiences with hard stuff off late.

*Statutory Warning*: The consumption of alcohol is a major factor in dancing like a retard.

Entered the 2-Year-Yahoo Club..

2 years ago, same day, I was "Bangalored" and was welcomed into a plush office space and assigned a cubicle marked with a golden star that read "Gowtham" and a mini-bucket of chocolates.
Never imagined life could change so much in 2 years.. too many things have happened to even pen down.

Spent almost all of today reading messenger and mail archives.. It's kinda lame, but I was a bit too nostalgic to care. How better to celebrate a turning point than taking another one. I will be starting the new year in a different team, with different people, at a different address.

Mumbai rocks....

.. with 7 blasts. The only channel covering this well is CNN-IBN with their citizen journalists.. giving live and first person accounts of the blasts. As of now around 104 people have been reported dead. The intelligence agencies claim that this has been orchestrated by LET (Lashkar-e-Toiba) with a helping hand from the D-Company.. no motive has yet been announced.

I'm too stunned to have any reaction on this outrageous news.

Livin on a prayer.... or not

People look towards Him for help.. forgiveness.. solace.. introspection. Me.. I look for inspiration.

I'v been brought up in a home where He's dearly loved and respected.. though I was always given my choice/freedom to have my own perpective towards Him... having said that, we, as children were made to pray daily, which I think is extremely important while growing up. There is a fine line between faith and dependance.. faith is often stretched to the extent that we leave all upto Him and indulge in a state of carefreeness that later allows us to conveniently put it all on Him, saying "Aaj khush toh bahut hoge tum!".

Visiting a temple, reading the Bhagvat Gita or holding the Rosary are to me ways to focus better on things that have gone remiss. I find a sense of inspiration, a better hold on myself everytime I read my St. Anthony's Prayer or visit the Hanuman temple on saturday's .. I can never say I have no one to talk to.. coz there's always He, who listens patiently, never judges, is always there, and whom I can never be angry with. Me, I'm not pious.. I'm just a guy with the coolest friend ever.

P.S. For those who dunno : The teams on Michelin tyres did not take part because they believed a chicane should have been added to slow down the final lap where Ralf Schumacher's tyre inexplicably blew on Friday.
F1 officials and Ferrari refused to sanction the proposal, which was backed by the nine other teams.

stealth bomber on Google maps...

This is pretty amazing. Germany's Spiegel Online has found a stealth bomber on Google Maps. It should have been blurred out, because it's on a secret part of a military base -- but Google must have missed it.. and its still there in Palmdale, CA.

Zoom out...and you'll see the metropolis of Los Angeles emerge just below it.
